Structured Data

Also known as: schema markup, semantic markup, JSON-LD

Machine-readable markup that communicates the meaning and relationships of website content to search engines and AI systems.

Full Definition

Structured data is code added to a webpage that provides explicit, machine-readable context about the content. Rather than expecting search engines and AI systems to infer meaning from unstructured text, structured data uses standardized vocabularies (most commonly schema.org) to define what entities are on the page, what their properties are, and how they relate to each other. For healthcare organizations, structured data can specify that a page is about a Physician, define their medical specialties, link them to the organization they work for, and list the conditions they treat. This clarity directly improves AI citation eligibility and search engine rich result eligibility.
