Schema markup is the implementation of structured data using the schema.org vocabulary. It is most commonly written in JSON-LD format (a JavaScript notation embedded in a script tag) and placed on webpages to tell search engines and AI systems what the content means. Schema.org is maintained by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Yandex, and includes over 800 types covering everything from generic content types like Article and WebPage to specific types like Physician, Hospital, MedicalProcedure, and MedicalCondition. For healthcare organizations, schema markup is one of the highest-leverage technical investments available because it directly feeds Google's Knowledge Graph and AI citation systems.
